FX's American Horror Story has been renewed for a fifth season after record ratings for the Freak Show premiere, but will the series really go on without star Jessica Lange?

It may not come as much of a surprise that FX chose to renew the horror anthology series after the premiere of American Horror Story: Freak Show received 10 million viewers over all platforms, the highest viewership in network history.

FX made the official announcement on Monday:

American Horror Story Season 5 Could Be About Aliens, According To 'Freak Show' Clues

"The American Horror Story anthology has had the highest growth trajectory of any show in FX history, not to mention an unprecedented track record of success in awards recognition," said John Landgraf, FX Networks and Productions CEO. "With Ryan Murphy and his partners, Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto and Tim Minear at the helm, the show's success is not surprising. AHS continues to deliver amazing stories, a brilliant troupe of actors led by Jessica Lange, and a visual style unlike any other on TV."

Considering Landgraf mentions Lange by name, it will be a big departure if she really does decide to leave the series after Freak Show. Lange has become the undeniable star of the American Horror Story anthology. First debuting in a supporting role as nosy neighbor Constance Langdon in Season 1, she has since gone on to have a starring role in the subsequent three seasons.

Lange's performances have resulted in two Emmy wins, one for the first season and the other for Coven.

Part of the success of the show can be attributed to Lange, so it may be hard to find another dynamic lead going into Season 5. However, Sarah Paulson has certainly proved herself over the past three seasons, and Kathy Bates is more or less the same caliber of actress as Lange, so she too could step into the leadership role.

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c on FX.
