'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Spoilers: James Gunn Talks 'Star Wars' Crossover & 'Time Travel' [VIDEO]
While still a few years away, writer/director James Gunn is fine with teasing what fans can expect from his next outing in the new Marvel franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, and where the characters will be headed in the future. But could that be far, far away?
How Does The 'Captain America 3' News Affect 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2?'
Gunn teased with Variety on Monday that something big could be happening right away in the next movie that would have major Marvel implications moving forward.
"It's going to be a really surprising open. What happens is all the characters are killed in the first 10 minutes," he joked. "In really horribly brutal fashion."
'Avengers 3' May Leave Out Two Of Your Favorite Members Of The Team
While he was just joking around, Gunn added that the film would include the return of all five team members and would include the addition of a few members. They will also be uncovering some secrets that the first movie mentioned.
"I spent all day on Aug. 1, the day the first movie was released, writing Guardians 2," Gunn said. "I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story."
As for the first movie, Gunn said that a lot of deleted scenes will be included on the Blu-ray that will have expanded moments with some of his favorite characters, including an interaction between Star Lord (Chris Pratt) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).
"In the long version of the scene where Rocket is laughing at Quill, Quill gets very offended by that and takes a vote of the other Guardians to see who thinks that the laugh is fake," Gunn said. "It's a pretty fake laugh, and I think Rocket gets hurt that Groot goes against him."
While he wasn't opposed to a crossover with some Disney properties, he said that one is completely out of the realm of possibility moving forward.
"Star Wars was a long time ago," Gunn said. "It would have to be time travel."
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is expected to come out on July 26, 2017.
