'Saw 8' Being Produced By The Director Of 'Insidious 3'?
As rumors of a new movie in the Saw series were recently spurred by co-creator, James Wan, of the thriller franchise, the director of Insidious 3 has added to the credibility of the suggestion, by stating that he might be producing the movie.
Saw 8 To Hit Theaters In Spring 2015?
In a recent interaction with fans promoting Insidious Chapter 3, Leigh Whannell, addressed a question about his involvement with Saw 8. Whannell co-wrote Saw with Wan, and the 10th anniversary of the movie was recently celebrated. His reponse was slightly noncommital.
"No, not involved at present but would be involved as producer," Whannell said.
Wan spoke to IGN, on the occasion of the movie being re-released around Halloween, on October 13, in theaters to mark a decade since the first in the series was made. While the director spoke about the movie, his experience making it, and its "pop cultural staying power," he also hinted at some possibly exciting news for fans if the gory series.
When asked if there was hope for Saw 8, the director was quite optimistic.
"I will say this: never say never again. [Laughs] Sean Connery made a movie about that, actually. You know, I think the Saw universe, the Saw brand, is too big to just let it just sit there on a shelf. I'll say that much."
Judging by Wan's words, it seems a big comeback with the franchise is in the pipeline.
Wan also weighed in on what he felt worked for the movie, and why it came to be such a phenomenal success, despite the small budget.
"It's a combination of everything, right?" he said. "You take one element out of it and you're not sure if it will end up being the same thing. So the fact that it was a low-budget film, not having a lot of money, and being forced to shoot the film at a really fast pace added to the very rough-and-dirty look that really benefitted the film, which I wasn't necessarily going for, but it ended up being a really great aesthetic for the film. So that coupled with our producers, who believed in it, and then it tested so well, that then gave Lionsgate, the studio, so much confidence to put a lot of money at that time into marketing the film. I thought the marketing was really smart and really clever and unique at the time. It positioned Saw as a horror film that was different from the other horror films that were in the crowded marketplace."
