The pair wrongly believes their friends are in the custody of the Grounders, and their unfortunate misconception will launch them on a dangerous mission as season 2 progresses.
"They believe that the Grounders took [their friends], and that's going to start them down a very dark path," explained executive producer Jason Rothenberg during a behind-the-scenes sneak peek for episode 2, "Inclement Weather." "We know that they are in Mount Weather and they have given them clothing and they are now safe and they are feeding them chocolate cake."

To make maters worse, Finn (Thomas McDonell) and Bellamy (Bob Morley) will soon start to disagree on the best course of action. According to Rothenberg, viewers will be floored by which character chooses to "go further and darker."
"Obviously they're wrong [about the Grounders]. It's an assumption that will lead to some really, really dark and cool developments this season for both of them and for everybody," Rothenberg told The Hollywood Reporter. "They're working together, their goal is the same - to find Clarke and their friends come hell or high water - and you begin to realize fairly quickly that their paths begin to diverge in terms of how far one or the other will go to get them back."
