Leyva has been upped to series regular status for Season 3, adding her to the ever expanding cast. She had a flashback episode in the middle of Season 2 that allowed her character to have more depth and meaning to the audience. In the episode, titled Low Self Esteem City, it was revealed that Gloria went to prison for committing fraud with food stamps, though her struggle with being the victim of domestic violence made her journey all the more tragic.

Leyva admitted to being proud of OITNB for the conversations it has started in covering several walks of life rarely seen on television.

"I'm really proud of the fact there are so many different types of women - strong women - six latinas, that's unheard of in a successful, critically acclaimed show, and we are a crucial part of the success of the show," Leyva said. "We're introducing people to so many different subjects: the LGBT community, women's issues, prison reform...this show is really educating and starting conversations across the board."

Leyva and her costars are hard at work on Season 3, though the actress said that she could "absolutely not" reveal any plot details.

Orange Is the New Black Season 3 is expected to begin streaming on Netflix in mid-2015, though the streaming service has not yet announced a specific return date. The first two seasons are currently streaming in full on the site.
