The Originals is subject to censorship, but that hasn't stopped The CW drama from pushing the boundaries when it comes to things that go bump in the night.

Werewolves Struggling On 'The Originals' This Season

On Sunday director Matt Hastings, who was hard at work shooting all last week, announced on Twitter that The Vampire Diaries spin-off has officially hit a whole new level of "creepy."

Find Out The 'Real' Tatia Story On 'The Originals'

Ever since Season 1 debuted in 2013, The Originals has often strived to blend the visually shocking with the emotionally disturbing, and so Hastings' message likely has something to do with the show's carefully crafted tone. Back on Oct. 13 the director shared a rather striking photo of him and an extra standing together on set. Hastings wore a standard black hat. The extra, on the other hand, had prosthetics designed to conceal his eyes as if they'd been torn right out of the sockets.

As the network's most unapologetically dark series, Hastings and the writers have a lot of options when it comes to making each scene as scary as possible.

The Originals continues on The CW with its second season Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
