'House of Cards' Season 3 Spoilers: Frank Underwood To Take On Putin In Next Chapter? [VIDEO]
A recent interview with Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, who is a guest director in season 3 of House of Cards, and other reports strongly hint at the fact that American-Russian tensions will be engaged in the next chapter of the Netflix political drama.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Holland actually addressed an interesting comparison, that between Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, stating that they were not alike.
"I don't think Frank Underwood is a good metaphor for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, because Putin didn't need to plot in a secret way," she said. "When he decided to kill some enemy, he just had them killed; when he sent troops to Ukraine, he's not hiding it. He's KGB. And he doesn't have a Claire Underwood."
Doug Stamper To Return In Season 3?
As has been reported before, with the inclusion of Pussy Riot in the plot of season 3, Russia will be a part of the theme.
"Without telling you what happens, once Francis Underwood becomes president, suddenly he faces different responsibilities and international situations, and I think there are some similarities to what's going on now. Because I have knowledge of international politics, know more about the Russians and what they do, I can bring that to the show."
This could mean that Frank will directly take on Putin in season 3 and that could be a very curious twist, as both are strong headed tyrants, but of different natures.
Earlier this year, House of Cards didn't get permission to film in the official UN headquarters in New York because the Russian representative did not consent. Pussy Riot are eblematic of rebelling against authority and have been the crusaders of dissent in Russia, having been put behind bars for the same. Perhaps the show will also feature America's dealings with Russia and the Putin's hostile attitude to Big Brother, highlighting the Ukrainian conflict.
The third season of House of Cards is currently filming in Maryland, where the first and second seasons were also shot. Initially, the continuation of filming of the third season of the Netflix series was fraught with troubles over the past few weeks as the producers weren't getting permission from the State of Maryland. But the issue was finally resolved on April 25.
