Bassett recently spoke with Vulture about her three-breasted hermaphrodite role on Freak Show while also discussing claims that Murphy and company may not be respectful of women on the show.
"Really? No!" Bassett said, when confronted about this topic. When Vulture provided the example that some found Coven to be especially brutal on the show's female characters, Bassett replied, "I think he gives us a chance to have some fun, you know?"

Discussing the topic further, it was noted that the show's campier moments (featured frequently in Coven) were sometimes a relief in comparison to the more brutal scenes.
"Right! It's very subversive," Bassett said. "You know, I'm working with Michael Chiklis this year, and us girls will be having a great time, and he's like, 'Oh, this part is so sick!' I'm like, what? You did The Shield and you think this is sick? We have to just pat him on the back and say, 'Aw, baby, you're getting sensitive.' And he's saying, 'I'm so concerned about these writers!' Oh, Michael. [Laughs.]"
Over the years, American Horror Story has gradually become a show about women and those who have been persecuted. With such a theme, it can be easy to think the show is reveling in the violence. However, the show is titled American Horror Story for a reason and while many horror tropes are present, the show has actually be progressive in depicting women from all walks of life, giving them their own unique storylines rather than just making them victims.
American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
