Chiklis spoke with Zap2It about his character, who will have a pretty significant episode Wednesday night, titled Pink Cupcakes. In the process, he dodged a question about his character Dell Toledo being a homosexual though he strongly suggested that this is indeed the case.
"Without giving too much away, there's a lot of backstory and a huge reveal in terms of his character and why he is the way he is," Chiklis said. "It's one of the real interesting and pivotal turns that his character takes over the course of the season. It certainly speaks to that period of time, the early '50s, and what he is going through and why. It's really big for his character's arc."

Asked directly if Dell is gay, Chiklis simply said, "That's interesting. You're right, I won't confirm that. [laughs] I think we need to leave it there, actually."
There is certainly a suggestion that Dell is hiding his homosexuality and given his taste in women, it begs the question. The strongman went from Ethel (Kathy Bates), a bearded lady, to Desiree (Angela Bassett), a three-breasted woman who has "both parts." Chills said that Dell considers himself to be a freak, which, by 1950s standards, is how many closeted homosexuals felt at the time.
American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
