Sherman Hemsley, who rose to stardom when he played dry cleaning business owner George Jefferson on the hit 1970s television show "The Jeffersons," died as a result of a cancer mass on his lung.

TMZ obtained the Postmortem Report exclusively from the El Paso County Texas Medical Examiner's office near the actor's home.

The document lists the the primary cause of death as "superior vena cava syndrome," complications resulting from a mass on a lung.

It is not known if Sherman was a smoker but TMZ also reports that the actor had been advised to get chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Hemsley, 74, was found dead on July 24 by his nurse at his home in El Paso, Texas.

Hemsley first became well-known on the hit show "All in the Family," which led to his infamous role on its spin-off, "The Jeffersons." He later appeared as Ernest Frye, a church deacon on NBC's "Amen" in 1986.

Three years later, Hemsley unsuccessfully tried his hand in music by releasing a single in 1989 called "Ain't That A Kick In The Head."  Although he made a few appearances on television in the late 90's and early 2000's, the actor had since retired.

The late actor was not survived by a wife or any kids.
