The CW got pretty flashback-heavy for The Originals last week, but on Monday night the drama will be digging even deeper into the Mikaelson family's past.

It looks like the show will be harkening back to the snow covered forests of 972 as the Vampire Diaries spin-off turns back the clock. Producer Michael Narducci even posted a photo from the set on Twitter Sunday giving fans a glimpse of what's to come.

'The Originals' Hits A Whole New Level Of Creepy

The flashbacks in this episode will be particularly significant because they go back to Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) parents at the very beginning of it all. During a behind-the-scenes look at "Wheel Inside The Wheel" on Friday (featured below), Narducci explained that the aim of this episode is to "give us a whole new branch of our mythology."

"[This is] the story of young Esther and young Mikael before they the creators of vampires," continued creator Julie Plec. "And it's really kind of beautiful and sad because you see a woman who just wanted a family so bad and she'd do anything to keep her husband happy and how terribly wrong ultimately that something like that can go."

The episode will show the hatred Klaus has for his mother Esther (Sonja Sohn) in the present, as well as look at who she was before she became the woman her children despised. She loved her children deeply when they were young and it was precisely that love which twisted everything into chaos.

The Originals continues on The CW with its second season Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
