While Jessica Lange has been adamant about not returning to FX's American Horror Story beyond this season, a recent interview suggests she might be open to returning.

Should Finn Wittrock & John Carroll Lynch Star In 'American Horror Story' Next Year?

It was widely reported in October 2013 that Freak Show would be Lange's last season with American Horror Story. Now, one year later, she might be open to negotiating a deal to appear in a future season. Lange spoke with E! Online recently and discussed series co-creator Ryan Murphy wanting her to return.

"You know, I told him that we would sit down and have a long conversation when [Freak Show] was over," Lange revealed. "In a way this character is so great, I don't know how you top Elsa Mars. I really-in deference to Ryan, who I love dearly and who I respect beyond-I have no idea at this point."

Angela Bassett Discusses 'Connection' Between 'American Horror Story' Characters

Lange believes that Elsa Mars might just be her best character after four seasons of American Horror Story. The actress, who has won two Emmys in three years for her work on the show, may want to go out on top with Elsa.

"When we go out to the set and we're out there in that compound with all the tents and the trailers, it just has a poetry to it that I think is unique," she admitted.

If Lange does end up leaving the show after Freak Show, it would certainly leave a big hole in the show that would need to be filled. It remains to be seen if Murphy and company find someone who could replace her, though Lange's mark on the show will truly never been replaced.

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
