The Originals was one of The CW's three new shows last year to score a second season and as the new episodes continues this fall, the Mikaelson family only becomes more complicated.

Esther Has A 'Horrifying' Plan This Season On 'The Originals'

"There's some crazy family dynamics going on, a lot of drama, a lot of violence," Joseph Morgan (Klaus) explained in an interview with Utah's ABC 4 on Thursday (featured below). He then added with a laugh, "Just like any family gathering."

Morgan delved into what it's like playing a hybrid, as well as his initial concerns about helming a spin-off series.

"Klaus is prone to fits of rage," explained the actor, "And I think that's really where the werewolf side comes in. That's what I've always believed anyway, and then the vampire is about controlling that."

Morgan made his CW debut on The Vampire Diaries before creator Julie Plec devised The Originals as its own series to explore the relationship between Klaus, Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Rebekah (Claire Holt), and their family in New Orleans.

"Obviously it's a huge amount of fun, I love playing this character," noted Morgan. "But yeah it's nerve-wracking, you know."

Becoming part of a big, pre-existing world and mythology wasn't easy, but Morgan has certainly enjoyed the journey.

"I joined Vampire Diaries after it was already a hit and I did two seasons with you those guys," he said. "And you know you want people to come across with you and to watch the show and to get it and enjoy it and that was really in the beginning what I was concerned about."

Eventually Morgan settled into the flow of things, surprised and delighted by how smoothly everything fell into place. "The fans have been incredibly loyal and supportive of the show…" added the actor. "It's a joy. It's been a lot of fun."

The Originals continues on The CW with its second season Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
