American Horror Story star Jessica Lange has revealed which character she thinks is the best one she played during her four-year run with the series.
Angela Bassett Discusses 'Connection' Between 'American Horror Story' Characters
Lange did an interview with Yahoo TV this week and talked about her current Freak Show character, Elsa Mars, being the "richest" one she has played.
"Yeah, it's the richest character I've played on this series, and it's also one of the richest characters I've played in a long time," Lange admitted. "There are such contradictions in her. There's that kind of brutal, blind ambition, and yet there's this quality where her innate nature is so needy. But at the same time, a great heart, and so generous. That was the one thing I did say to [executive producer] Ryan [Murphy]: I want to make sure that it's very clear how much she loves her monsters. That is, as Elia Kazan would say, the spine of the character. She loves them."

Lange has certainly created some memorable characters during her run on the series, including the nosy neighbor Constance in Season 1, the strict Sister Jude in Asylum and the Supreme witch Fiona Goode in Coven. With Freak Show, Elsa Mars is actually her most subdued character, rarely spouting quippy one-liners like her previous three characters.
Elsa may just be her most compassionate character as well, despite some conniving in the latest episodes. Lange said that this season is about to get even weirder.
The 65-year-old actress is planning on leaving American Horror Story after Freak Show, though she still plans on having a discussion with Murphy about potentially returning.
"I think what has to happen is, Ryan and I have to have time to sit down and really talk," she said. "Because I love him dearly, and I know he wants me to continue. I don't want to, but... [Laughs.] I don't want to say anything definitive, because we haven't had the moments that we need to sit down and really have this conversation."
American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
