Showtime's Penny Dreadful has had its share of complex and tender moments, but that doesn't mean creator John Logan is afraid to throw in a good old fashioned "barroom brawl."

On Wednesday the Showtime series released a new production blog exploring the stunts behind the Victorian supernatural drama (featured below).

"You want an action sequence to have it's own DNA," explained Logan. "It's own feel to it."

Working with Stunt Coordinator Pete Miles, the crew designed a series of different camera rigging to achieve the most in-depth coverage for all fires, fights, and other intense action sequences. The aim was to use the actors as much as possible, though sometimes the danger element forced them to forsake authenticity.

"We wanted the Penny Dreadful action sequences to be appropriate to the piece," noted Logan, "So our fights are barroom brawls."

Logan's use of the term "barroom brawl" can be taken as both a figure of speech and literally, with a number of fights throughout season one actually taking place in bars.

"They're really ugly and violent," noted Logan of the fight sequences. "It has the feeling of savagery."

With Episode 4 of the second season already in production, the series will be expanding its scope while at the same time keeping true to all the detailed elements which originally made the program a success to begin with.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
