With Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) now an officer at Arkham Asylum on Fox's Gotham, fans can look forward to this setting becoming a major territory explored in the second half of season 1.

Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon spoke with TVLine after the fall finale this week and teased how Arkham Asylum will be incorporated now that he's been ordered to work there by Mayor Aubrey James (Richard Kind).

As it turns out, Arkham will essentially become another character unto itself.

"Without a doubt," Cannon said when asked if Arkham would become a major character going forward. "And Episode 11 will really solidify that. When you're making a show basically about the lunatics that are running the asylum - and I imagine that's what Gotham is - it's really good to actually go to an asylum and do stories there, because you can be as bold as you want to be."

As such, upcoming episodes will uncover the truth about Arkham in how it not only houses the criminal insane but those who were wrongfully convicted.

"Not only are there dangerously criminally insane people there, but some people are put there for the wrong reasons and swept under the rug," Cannon revealed. "It's a big rug that corrupt Gotham can sweep people under sometimes."

Among other significant storylines moving forward in Gotham are the ongoing mob war with Don Falcone (John Doman), Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Sal Maroni (David Zayas) as well as Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Selina Kyle's (Camren Bicondova) blossoming relationship.

With many different storylines being tackled, it is a wonder that the show doesn't crumble. But Cannon admitted that the "utter joy" he and his fellow producers, cast and crew take in creating the series is what keeps everything together.

Gotham returns for the second half of its first season on Monday, Jan. 5 in the same 8 p.m. timeslot on Fox.
