Previous seasons of FX's American Horror Story have featured Sarah Paulson's characters making it to the end alive, but will this continue for Freak Show?

Spoilers for AHS: Asylum and AHS: Coven ahead:

American Horror Story: Asylum and Coven featured Paulson's characters surviving to the very end of the season and essentially emerging as the hero.

'American Horror Story' Star Finn Wittrock On If He Would Say 'Yes' To Season 5 & That Shirtless Montage

In Asylum, her Lana Winters escaped the Briarcliff asylum and lived to tell the tale while in Coven, her Cordelia Goode Foxx was revealed to be the Supreme witch, coming out on national television and inviting fellow witches to enroll at her academy.

Now in Freak Show, Paulson plays Dot and Bette Tattler, conjoined twins with differing personalities. While Dot has been shown to be moody and manipulative, neither one of them is an outright villain. It seems that they were originally presented as the heroes of the season, though they sometimes disappear into the background.

Many other actors have characters that are similar to previous seasons, such as Jessica Lange playing an aging woman with selfish intentions, Evan Peters playing a simple-minded heartthrob and Frances Conroy playing a kooky scene-stealer. With Paulson once again playing a character having to overcome adversity, does this mean she will make it to the end as one of the few remaining freak show performers still alive?

The Twins' lives are constantly being threatened, with murderous Dandy (Finn Wittrock) being obsessed with them, Stanley (Denis O'Hare) wanting to nab any freaks he can for an exhibit and Elsa (Lange) turning them against each other at any opportunity.

It remains to be seen if Bette and Dot will survive to the finale, but with Bette's innocence, it is possible that she could get herself in trouble and ultimately killed while Dot remains alive. Anything is possible on American Horror Story.

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
