Will 'American Horror Story's Sarah Paulson's Twins Survive Until End of Season?
MAJOR spoilers for Wednesday night's episode of American Horror Story: Freak Show ahead:
It was a shocking end to one of the more interesting characters on American Horror Story on Wednesday. After facing off against Elsa (Jessica Lange), Ethel Darling (Kathy Bates) became the latest death at the freak show, with Elsa throwing a knife at her head in self defense.
This was a bit of a shock considering Bates is one of the primary actresses on the show, but it is possible that she will be returning in future episodes. Bates spoke to Entertainment Weekly after the episode and teased a return is possible.
"Well this is American Horror Story so anything can happen! [Laughs] That's all I can say about that," Bates said when asked about appearing in future episodes.
Last season's Coven proved that anything really can happen on American Horror Story, with Bates' character Madame LaLaurie being a disembodied head for several episodes. With the earlier appearance in Freak Show of Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) and his group of ghosts, it is possible that Ethel could return to haunt Elsa.
If this was actually Bates' final episode, she is still hoping to return for season 5 as a new character.
"Well of course there is," she said, when asked if there was a chance she would return. "I love [executive producer] Ryan [Murphy]. I love working with him and for him. One thing I didn't get a chance to say in my Emmy speech is that after Harry's Law and then I had gotten sick with breast cancer, I was really in the dumps. I was really like, 'I'll never work again. I'm too old. Blah blah blah.' Lo and behold, I get this amazing call from Ryan to come in and meet with him. He created these wonderful parts for me to play and I'll be forever in his debt for that. He's rejuvenated my career in a way that I have a young audience now and that's fabulous! So why wouldn't I want to come back for more of that?"
American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
