'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' Movie News: Sony Hack Reveals Plans For Spidey & 'Men In Black,' Does It Signal Even More Films Than Expected? [VIDEO]
While Sony tries to find out what to do with the future of their most profitable franchise, a recent hack has shown what their discussions were back in 2012 and the concern that the studio has for the future of their brand.
Could Spider-Man Work As A Netflix Series?
Gawker uncovered on Wednesday a document titled "Sony_2012_Comments." The document was a stream of ideas and discussions within Sony Pictures (SPE in the document) and the problems that were setting in about the other brands they have (which is probably still prominent now also).
One part dove into two of the franchises, Spider-Man and Men in Black, and the lack of innovation in those films and the rest of their output which included Adam Sandler movies.
Could This Potential Oscar Nominee Become The Next Superhero In Sony's Spider-Man Universe?
"Are you aware that Men In Black 3 may gross $600M at the box office, and yet will lose money for SPE? Shouldn't we question that strategy? Why are some studios making Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight - and we are considering movies like Moneyball, Steve Jobs story, Captain Phillips Story, Evel Knievel story, etc."
It continued to break down the value of Spider-Man and show that while Sony owned the movie rights, Disney still owned the merchandising, which made more money than the films yearly and actually lost Sony money.
"Are you aware that SPE only has 1 franchise - Spiderman. Yet, it took 5 years to generate a sequel? Spidey 3 was released in summer 2007, #4 in 2012. Don't harry potters come out over 2-3 years?"
"Are you aware that SPE has only 1 franchise - Spidey? Yet we waited 5 years after Spidey 3 (2007) to release #4? Have you read the SEC annual report? Disney will make $300M on Spidey merchandise this year alone. We won't!"
Judging from this, and the rest of the report, there are a lot of issues within Sony and the arguable lack of innovation seen in their Spider-Man franchise by fans is also seen by the executives up top. Who knows where this will lead, but it does verify some of the feelings that audiences have felt about their recent work.
