Penny Dreadful is getting some very human villains for its second season on Showtime, but that doesn't mean demons are completely out of the picture.

Find Out 'The Perks' of Directing 'Penny Dreadful'

At the end of the season 1 finale, Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) was left with a choice to make: rid herself of evil forever or keep her demonic connection alive and remain unique within the mortal world. With production for the show's second season nearly halfway through, it's likely that Vanessa's relationship to the ancient Egyptian Gods will be explored even further.

"I want you to be the Mother of Evil," revealed the demon to Vanessa towards the end of season 1. "I want you to rule the darkness with me, at my side, looking over a black, scorched, dead world where there is no more pain because there are no more hearts to feel. We have eaten them all, thee and me."

'Penny Dreadful' Earns 3 Satellite Award Nominations

With the latest photo from the set featuring a weathered Vanessa in the arms of her loyal friend Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), the weight of this darkness is taking its toll.

Perhaps the most telling clue about Vanessa's fate lies in the fact that actor Simon Russell Beale (Ferdinand Lyle) was bumped up to series regular for the second season back in September.

Appearing as an Egyptologist consulted by Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and Vanessa at that start of season 1, Beale's character was the one who first discovered that the demon was after Vanessa. His knowledge of Egyptian lore and history also suggests that the Egyptian background of this evil will be elaborated on in the new episodes.

The show has already established Egyptian hieroglyphics on the bodies of old vampires, and with creator John Logan promising a broader scope for season two Egyptian lore seems like the most logical next direction to move in.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for its second season in 2015.
