The NBC series will introduce Chiyo, Lady Murasaki's attendant. It was originally believed that Tao Okamoto would take on the role of Lady Murasaki, but it appears the she will play Chiyo instead.
"Tao Okamoto is an amazing actress who you might know from The Wolverine," said series creator, according to Collider. "She's a young woman, and we were very excited when she was interested in the role of Lady Murasaki, but Lady Murasaki is an older woman."
Now that Chiyo will become a more pivotal character, she will borrow from Murasaki's story.
"It's the same story, but the character is Chiyo, who is also from the literature," Fuller explained to Collider. "So, we're expanding that character and her history with Hannibal. There were a lot of things that we needed the character to do, story wise, that didn't make sense for Lady Murasaki to do. With Chiyo, we had a greater rein."
Hannibal is currently filming, and the psychological thriller will return to NBC in 2015. Click the video below to see the final moments of season 2.
