'The Originals' Season 2 Spoilers: Producer Talks Shocking Final Twist & Why Daniel Gillies' Elijah Almost Got The Axe For 2015 [VIDEO]
The Originals pulled one final twist during the last few moments of the midseason finale on The CW Monday night.
Kol's Secret Plan To Betray Klaus On 'The Originals'
Some fans might dislike the controversial ending, which had Kol (Daniel Sharman) put Rebekah (Claire Holt) into the body of a witch (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) trapped by Klaus (Joseph Morgan) decades before. Nonetheless, executive producer Michael Narducci considers the body swap essential to this season's narrative arc.
"I think it's the threat of any of the Originals, going into a new body has been there from the start…" Narducci told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. "She [Esther] started the season by putting Kill and Finn into new bodies, and in order for that threat to have any teeth, it's going to have to work on somebody [else]."
Elijah & Rebekah Make Shocking Decisions In 'The Originals' Midseason Finale
At the start of the season, the writers tossed around a few possibilities. They looked at what it would be like to put Elijah in a mortal body and Rebekah in a mortal body before eventually deciding who to go with.
"We felt the story line made the most sense for Rebekah…" explained Narducci. "She wants to be mortal so she can experience a human life and have a family, and maybe this is the best thing in the world for her, because after a thousand years, I think Rebekah takers for granted vampire strength, vampire speed, vampire invulnerability and just the safety that comes with being immortal."
While actress Claire Holt is no longer a regular on the series, putting Rebekah into a new body opens up more Rebekah-centered storylines for the second half of the season. Narducci even admitted that saving her will become a prominent focus for her brothers when the season returns in 2015.
"She is in a dangerous place and they don't know where she is," noted Narducci. "So, for a little while, it becomes all hands on deck, we need to find and rescue Rebekah…I think there's a pretty interesting and satisfying conclusion to that storyline."
Narducci also mentioned that Esther's sister Dahlia, who aims to claim each first-born Mikaelson, will become a growing threat moving forward.
The Originals will return on The CW to continue its second season in 2015.
