Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) finally told Elijah (Daniel Gillies) about her engagement on The CW's The Originals Monday night, but these impending nuptials might be more of a death sentence than they seem.

Why Body Swapping Won't Change 'The Originals'

During this week's midseason finale, Hayley at last told Elijah of her plan to marry Jackson (Nathan Parsons) so that through the werewolf ceremony her pack will inherit the ability to control their powers. Heartbroken, Elijah reluctantly gave his blessing. Unable to deny their attraction and perhaps even mourning the loss of the future they will never have together, Hayley and Elijah then hooked up, presumably for the first and last time.

Fans of Hayley and Elijah won't go quietly and since this upcoming marriage to Jackson seems like a "till-death-do-we-part" situation, will Hayley's decision to marry Jackson really signing his own death certificate? Will showrunners ultimately elect to kill Jackson off later down the line in order to reopen to Elijah and Hayley storyline?

Why Daniel Gillies' Elijah Almost Got Booted From 'The Originals'

Over the last few episodes the series has been emphasizing the very "real" nature of this marriage. It has to be authentic in order for Hayley's hybrid traits to be passed onto the pack. This means there's no splitting up or faking it for the sake of her people. As a result, it looks like death might be the only out.

Showrunners have never been afraid to kill characters off before. In fact, with the exception of fan-favorite Josh (Steven Krueger), it seems everyone outside Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) circle is expendable.

Even if the marriage ceremony does work and Hayley saves her people, it will most certainly cause some conflict later down the way.

The Originals returns on The CW to continue with its second season Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
