‘The Newsroom’ Final Season: Sam Waterston Talks Filming His Character’s Death, ‘I Noticed Everybody Who Wasn’t On Camera Was Wearing A Bowtie’ [VIDEO]
The Newsroom lost Sam Waterston's character Charlie Skinner forever in its latest aired episode.
This past Sunday, the second to last episode of the series aired called Oh Shenandoah, which ended with Charlie having a heart attack and dying.
HBO's website released an interview with the seasoned actor to discuss his beloved character and what it was like to film his demise.
'The Newsroom's Sam Waterston Talks About The Series Ending
Waterston mentioned, "The cast and crew of the show treated me like I was their mascot, and I'm sure that wasn't just because of my charming personality. It had a lot to do with the character of Charlie."
He recalled, "Everybody was looking so sad already, I couldn't look them in the eye," when filming his character's death.
"I was supposed to come in and freak out and have a heart attack, I couldn't be feeling all warm and nostalgic," he shared.
He mentioned show creator Aaron Sorkin approached him and said, "Have you noticed what's going on?"
Waterston shared, "I said, 'Yes, I can't look at anyone because it's all the wrong feelings.'"
"After I had several heart attacks and died several times, I noticed that everybody who wasn't on camera was wearing a bowtie. That's what he was referring to. I was referring to the fact that everyone was emotional, he was referring to the fact that as a gesture of affection for Charlie they had put on bowties to mark the occasion of his demise," Waterston divulged.
The Newsroom airs its final episode on HBO at 9 p.m. ET Sunday. The episode is called What Kind of Day Has It Been.
