The hostage-taker who held up a Sydney, Australian cafe on Monday morning has been identified as Man Haron Monis.

According to CNN, this self-styled Muslim cleric also known as Sheih Haron, held 17 employees and customers hostage for 16 hours and police have recently confirmed that the operation is finally over.

Details surrounding the situation have yet to be released as authorities are still investigating the issue.

The standoff ended early on Tuesday morning after police stormed the café where the gunman had been holding hostages.

The gunman made a number of demands including bring an ISIS flag into the building, and he also made the hostages use social media to negotiate with officials.

The hostage situation began on Monday at 10 a.m. local time and lasted nearly 16 hours. Police officials, including snipers, immediately took positions surrounding the Lindt Chocolate Café in the capital city.

A few of the hostages managed to escape the café on Monday, however there were other hostages who still remained in the café.

In addition to this Australian hostage crime, the man has recently pleaded guilty last year after it was reported that he had been writing offensive letters to families of Australian service members.

The Weekend Australian reported that the man received 300 hours of community service for that offense, but that wasn't the only time he's been in trouble with the law.

In 2013, he was charged with aiding in the murder of his ex-wife and according to Australian news sources, he's been free on bail since.

Authorities recently revealed that three people have died including the gunman has also been killed.

It is also belived that the gunman was acting alone.
