Phillips chimed in, and others agreed, that the book series does in fact feature Vietnam flashbacks which writers had never been able to work into the television series.
Even without the flashbacks on the series, Phillips insisted that the extra details in the novels have helped to "inform" his portrayal of the character on the crime drama and thanked Johnson for his thoroughness as a storyteller.
The television series debuted on A&E in 2012 and ran for three seasons before the network elected to drop the program earlier this year. The show was picked up in December by Netflix and production for the new episodes is set to start in March.
Longmire will likely return on Netflix for a fourth season in the summer of 2015.
