Showtime's Penny Dreadful has a tendency to leave no mythological stone unturned and as season 2 picks up in 2015 the show's exploration of the occult will only deepen.

"The Victorians loved the occult," insisted creator John Logan during an interview with Showtime on Friday (featured below). "They just loved everything to do with the afterlife."

This relationship between the living and the occult is particularly explored on the series through Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who even went through demonic possession during season 1.

During the interview Geraldine Baskin, owner of a London bookstore familiar with occult texts, noted that there are different sorts of possession. "You can channel an entity or a demon," she noted. "You can elect to be possessed, but you have to be experienced."

Vanessa's reluctance to give up her connection to the demon that possessed her suggests that perhaps she will "elect" to be possessed in the future, or at the very least explore her darker side a bit more.

Actress Helen McCrory (Madame Kali) hinted at the potential to explore black magic as Penny Dreadful moves forward into season 2, which could have something to do with her character's role as this season's human villain. Baskin explained that "what makes magic black is the intent" and if Madame Kali intends to do some damage with this magic, then dame she most certainly will do.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
