Kathy Bates, of FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show, recently revealed that she has had certain doubts about acting over the years.

How 'American Horror Story's Stanley Is The 'Engine' Behind 'Freak Show'

Bates played "bearded lady" Ethel Darling on American Horror Story this season, a woman was often depressed with her lot in life. The actress recently spoke with ET Online about how she related to the character in relation to her own struggles as a performer.

"Over the years, because it actually was something I struggled with for a long time, I really questioned the value of what we do," she admitted. "What I discovered is that it has to do with empathy. At its best we can make something that can change people's hearts and minds, and we can bring humanity to our characters and show that there's humanity in all of us - that we're all human beings - and that's what I hope I get to show in my work."

Bates' Ethel was certainly one of the more sympathetic characters on Freak Show, which is noteworthy on a show that often features evil characters.

The actress said that she loved the "camaraderie" of working with the cast, particularly Sarah Paulson and Gabourey Sidibe, who she listed as good friends of hers now. She also said that she "adores" working with Jessica Lange and hopes that Freak Show is not her last season.

Either way, it looks like Bates is here to stay on American Horror Story so at least there will be one legendary actress in the bunch next season.

American Horror Story: Freak Show returns on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
