The connection between Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) was as unexpected as it was fascinating, particularly due to the subtext revealing where both characters stood emotionally.

"Our version of Dorian Gray is somewhat different than Oscar Wilde's," explained creator John Logan during a behind-the-scenes look at the scene on Monday (featured below).

Director Reveals Favorite Episode Of 'Penny Dreadful' In 2014

"What fascinated me about Dorian Gray is eternity," he added, "The essential sadness about a character that will never die."

Dorian's life of excess is the result of a craving for life that, because of his immortality, will never be fulfilled. As for Ethan, his attraction towards Dorian appears to lie in a need to steady himself. He is grounded in that moment between them despite the chaos of his secret life as a werewolf.

"Ethan is there because he really feels like something needs to be explored between the two of them," explained Hartnett.

Perhaps they were drawn together by the fact that they each have a supernatural secret. Both of these characters also have a special connection with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), which could mean something for the series moving forward. It might be no coincident that intimacy with Dorian sparked Vanessa's demonic possession and Ethan was the one who ultimately exorcised that demon.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
