Vanessa Ives may not just be battling literal demons when Showtime's Penny Dreadful returns this year.

'Penny Dreadful' Cast Offers Classic Literature Readings

Demonic possession was one of Vanessa's (Eva Green) primarily struggles during season 1 of the Victorian supernatural drama, but the guilt which weighed upon her over the vampirism of Mina Murray (Olivia Llewellyn) was definitely an emotional blow.

Vanessa's possession following intimacy with Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) proved that her emotions seem to be directly tied to her more supernatural inclinations, and so the death of Mina during the season one finale could just have a bigger impact during the program's second season than fans might think. Mina had, after all, been her best friend and confident. The loss of Mina's friendship even triggered Vanessa's first battle with demonic possession.

In killing Mina In order to save Vanessa, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) made a devastating choice. Now that he's claimed Vanessa as an adoptive daughter, will he protect her? Resent her for the decision he was forced to make? There are certainly plenty of possibilities moving forward.

In the latest trailer for the new season, released Dec. 24, Vanessa conveyed a strong opinion on her gifts (featured below). "The time came when I learned that a curse was also something of a blessing," she noted during the trailer. "I learned to make use of the gifts I had been given. You do the same."

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
