John Mayer stepped out for a friend's celebration at the Mondrian Los Angeles hotel minus the long shoulder-sweeping hair that he has been recently sporting around town on Aug. 25.

The singer was joining friend Mindy Kaling to help celebrate her new show, "The Mindy Project," and just days after splitting from Katy Perry, Mayer, 34, had a short cut dramatically different from his previous style.

People magazine confirmed that he got the haircut on Friday afternoon by celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger in her L.A. salon.

The "Daughters" singer grew out his hair during his two-year break from the spotlight and the microphone and still had it while dating Perry, 27.

The magazine also reported that only a day before his new look, he was spotted at Soho House in Hollywood sipping drinks and "flirting and talking" to women.

A source close to Perry said though the singer's relationship with Mayer ended quickly, Perry did hope that it would last longer.

"They weren't serious, but she was really starting to fall for him," the source said. "She wasn't seeing forever with him, but saw it lasting longer than it did."

Rumored first circulated of their romance when the couple were seen together at the Chateau Marmont Hotel and also side-by-side when leaving a house party in Los Angeles. Most notably, Mayer was photographed leaving Perry's house in the early morning, suggesting that they spent the night together.

However, Enstarz previously reported that Mayer was rumored to be the one to end the relationship, with US Weekly confirming that Perry was "really upset about it" and hurt. There are conflicting reports as to whether they remain friends.

Mayer has had a long list of A-list celebrity girlfriends, including Jennifer Aniston, who is now engaged, and Taylor Swift, who is dating Conor Kennedy.
