Despite having the highest premiere in American Horror Story history, the current season, Freak Show, is continuing to sink in the ratings as each episode goes by.

'American Horror Story' Star Lily Rabe Addresses Possibly Returning For Season 5

American Horror Story: Freak Show premiered to 6.13 million viewers back in October (not factoring in Live + three-day DVR playback), but now the latest episode cannot boast such success. The penultimate episode of AHS: Freak Show, titled Show Stoppers, was watched by just 2.94 million viewers. While this does not necessarily factor in DVR playback either, it is a steep drop from its monstrous premiere rating.

Even the adults 18-49 demographic is falling. Freak Show premiered to a 3.1 rating for viewers watching it live, but the latest episode had a 1.4 rating.

It is not abundantly clear what is causing such a steep drop in ratings, though there is definitely a mixed reception to Freak Show. While some are enjoying the show week to week, others are losing interest, perhaps due to an arguable lack of a driving force carrying the season.

Ratings are generally up for finales, so Freak Show may see an uptick for fans wanting to see how everything ends. The finale, titled Curtain Call, will also be the final episode for Jessica Lange, who announced that she was leaving the series after Freak Show. It is still possible that she could come back for a guest spot in the future, though Elsa Mars will probably be her last starring role in the horror anthology.

The finale of American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
