Played by Daniella Alonza, the only psychiatrist assigned to the night shift will not return to the NBC series. As the second season opens, The Night Shift will focus more on the bloodier side of medicine.
"We're opening up and getting more surgery and more of the paramedic world," executive producer Jeff Judah told The Wrap at the winter TCAs.

That means viewers will hopefully get a chance to see TC (Eoin Macken) and his coworkers heading out into the field more often. From rescuing children in perilous car wrecks and tending to hunter's wounds, the staff of the San Antonio Medical Center really shine when they leave the ER behind.
The addition of trauma surgeon Dr. Joey Chavez (Adam Rodriguez) and Gwen (Merle Dandridge) the paramedic showcase this new direction.
