According to TMZ, the 37-year-old tried to "outrun an oncoming train" near the Burbank, Calif. station when he tripped and landed in the tracks. The fitness guru was unable to get himself out in time.

"We are devastated over the loss of our son. Your messages have uplifted us and give us strength; we thank you for that. Greg's soul is now with our heavenly Father. May his spirit live on through his website and through each of you," his family said in a statement posted on Plitt's personal website.

Plitt has filmed similar videos in the past, but he didn't have a permit in this specific circumstance. Arthur J. Miller, an expert in railroad safety, explained to Deadline that shooting on tracks can be expensive and that's why many just trespass to obtain the footage.

"It's pretty clear that they were trespassing. Sadly, we are once again reminded that unauthorized access to railroad property and trains is a criminal act that can end in tragedy. You would think the lessons learned from the Midnight Rider tragedy would have worked to prevent this event," he said in reference to Sarah Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant killed by a train while filming.

Bravo executive Andy Cohen praised Plitt after his death via Twitter, writing, "We couldn't take our eyes off Greg Plitt after we cast him on 'Work Out'-was as nice as he was beautiful. Seemed invincible, like Superman."
