Graham Yost revealed in an interview with Yahoo! TV that published just a few hours before the final season premiere how the decision to kill off Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman) came about and more.

'Justified' Star Joelle Carter Live Tweeted The Final Season Premiere Revealing Plenty Of Details
"I think it was Michael Dinner's idea, one of the writers of the first episode. Tim (Olyphant) really latched onto it as well," he shared, admitting, "It was harder for the rest of us because we just love Dewey so much. It's such a fun character to write, and then Damon Herriman has just been such a dream to work with."
"But we recognized that there's, in a way, no better way to show what the stakes are for Ava (Joelle Carter) than to have Boyd (Walton Goggins) kill a beloved, kind of hapless character that only maybe is a threat of betrayal. It sets up the what if Boyd finds out that Ava is snitching on him," Yost stated.
Yost also mentioned he planned to kill Dewey back in Season 1, but the idea was turned down by the network and studio.
He said executive producer Sarah Timberman told him, "No! You can't kill Dewey!"
Justified is airing now on FX at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesdays.
