One Direction VMA 2012 Debut Resurrects Boy Band Phenomenon In The U.S., Photos of VMA Rehearsal
Boy band sensation One Direction is going to be at the MTV Video Awards for the first time ever on Sept. 6 and they are nominated for some of the biggest awards of the night.
The first timers are up for Best New Artist and Best Pop Video, and they are going against the Wanted, another U.K. band that has been taking the U.S. by storm. The battle of the boy bands will take center stage starting at 8 p.m./ 7c.
In a backstage video, posted on MTV.com, the night's host, Kevin Hart, took to schooling the singers about how winning works in the States.
"It's my job to prepare you for what could happen," Hart said to Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. "Here, in our realm of the world in the States, when people win awards, we're tough about it. I just want to teach you guys how to be tough about winning an award, OK?"
The first thing he taught them to do was use slang.
"Slang is what black people do when we win," he said. "It's how we talk."
The band is also up for Most Share-Worthy Video, competing against Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye.
In 2011, One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" broke Sony Music United Kingdom's record for the fastest-selling single in the U.K. and now that same song, which is the first single off of their first album "Up All Night," is the nominated song to represent the band in the Best New Artist category.
The band will also perform on Thursday night. To see behind the scenes photos of 1D rehearsing for their big night, click here.
The night's award presenters include Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and the "Fierce Five" Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross.
