The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Los Angeles' Staples Center on Thursday at 8pm EST. The musical festivities will include several performances by many of the biggest names in music today such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, to name a few.

The show will literally be a lyrical promotion, as it mashes together 120 minutes of some of the finest performances over the past year.

Singing sensation Demi Lovato will be on hand to perform her hit "Give Your Heart A Break" during the pre-show to the event.

VMA mainstay Taylor Swift will also be one of the many to grace the stage to sing a new song from her upcoming album titled "Red."

On Sept. 2, Swift had touched on some of the pre-stage butterflies that a performer can face, according to MTV.

"The thing about the VMAs is, the people that help put together the performances are honestly some of the best people you have ever worked with and they put together these huge, vast, massively entertaining performances. You have to make sure that you are ready to go onstage and face the entire world of music fans that are watching that show," she said.
