Gotham star Cory Michael Smith recently spoke about his character Edward Nygma and how he will transition into becoming the flamboyant and over the top Riddler.

'Gotham's Bruce Wayne Slated To 'Confront' Gordon For Not Making Progress On Murder Case?

Smith's Edward Nymga is still in the benign stage of his transition into The Riddler on Gotham, though there are certainly hints being dropped in with each new episode as to why he becomes the iconic villain. His courtship of Ms. Kringle (Chelsea Spack) has been an ongoing storyline that has mostly resulted in heartbreak as his co-workers mercilessly tease him.

The internalizing of that cruelty is something Smith is excited to explore, as he explained to The Hollywood Reporter recently. The actor used the metaphor of a big U curve as Edward's character development.

Danny DeVito Comments On Robin Lord Taylor As The Penguin on 'Gotham'

"What I'm really excited about is the bottom of that curve," he admitted. "Going from this quite innocent, well-intentioned, joyful person to starting to find this other part of him that he didn't know he had - accessing this place where he responds to the unfortunate things that people are doing to him, and starting to realize how cruel people are to him and how they mistreat him, and then doing that back to them.

"He's a person who's constantly abused, and to finally reach a part of himself where he just can't take it anymore and starts doing it to other people - and it's out of anger and exhaustion, and then realizing that when you start taking control of situations like that, you can gain power that way - it'll be something that he can start to enjoy."

It is unknown when Edward will be deciding to join the forces of evil, though with Gotham recently being renewed for season 2, there should be plenty of time for Smith to explore his character.

As such, once Edward becomes "this completely other person because he's finally realized how to harness power, he's going to have a great time with it. That's how you end up with the Riddler, who is this very joyful villain."

Right now the focus is on Oswald Cobblepot/the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) in addition to original character Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) as main villains. It remains to be seen if Edward will become a significant villain in the future.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
