Doctor Who's female iteration of the Master proved a Time Lord can change their gender, but there is one former Doctor that doesn't believe the series' title character should make the switch.

Peter Davison, the man behind the Fifth Doctor, believes the traditionally male role should continue to be dominated by those with a 'Y' chromosome.

"I speak now as a fan who grew up watching it," Davison told ABC. "I have trouble with the idea of a female Doctor, only because I reckon if you're born on Gallifrey a man, you're probably a male Time Lord."

According to the Brit, the 2005 reboot of the classic series depends on an unsure Time Lord and his strong-willed female companion. To reverse the roles would allegedly put the female actor in a weaker role.

"It seems to me if you reverse that, if you have an uncertain, fallible female Doctor with a really strong male companion, you've got more of a stereotype than anything else," Davison explained.
