With about months to go before she gives birth, Carrie Underwood's motherly instincts are already kicking in.

The singer's latest single is one of the country star's first moves into exploring parenting as a performer. Little Toy Guns tells the story of a child who hears her parents fighting and wishes that their words were harmless toys instead of a tormenting truth.

For Underwood, it's an important subject.

"There's so many people who can relate to a story like that," she told People during a behind-the-scenes look at the song's new music video on Monday. "Talking about words and how much they can hurt and you just wish they were more like little playthings, things that didn't actually do any damage."

When it came to designing a music video for the single, Underwood wanted to be careful with the way they approached the material. "Basically, we were like what do we do with this? I didn't want to follow the storyline exactly," explained the singer, "And I didn't want it to be too serious, I just really wanted it to be relatable."

Underwood credited director P.R. Brown, whom she worked with for the Two Black Cadillacs music video, for coming up with the setup.

To approach the subject they employed a storybook theme, showing a little girl emerging as the hero of her own tale.

By approaching the video with a positive spin, it seems that Underwood is preaching empowerment for children living in difficult circumstances. It is likely a lesson she will also teach her son as he grows up.

Underwood is expected to give birth this spring, though she and NHL husband Mike Fisher have decided to keep the due date just between the two of them for the time being.
