Showtime is taking a close look behind Ethan Chandler's transformation on Penny Dreadful.

Why Vanessa Ives Might Be In Hiding On 'Penny Dreadful'

"We don't really know what's going on," teased creator John Logan in reference to the season 1 finale during a behind-the-scenes interview on Tuesday (featured below). "And then something violent and inexplicable happens."

Ethan's (Josh Hartnett) reveal as a werewolf was a long time coming, with many fans guessing at his nature before ever seeing anything concrete to support the theory. Nonetheless, Logan wanted to make for a tense sequence just before he transformed in front of viewers for the first time.

Crew Dishes On New Character For Season Two Of 'Penny Dreadful'

The scene was certainly striking, if not necessarily unexpected.

For season two Logan has promised to explore Ethan's origins as a werewolf, though there are likely to be a few surprises along the way.

"Keeping the audience a little on edge at every moment is important to us," insisted Logan, who structured the series around Ethan's big reveal.

Fans are aware that Ethan comes from America, but it is uncertain whether being a werewolf was something he was born into or changed into. Does it have to do with his family? Or is it unique just to him?

There are plenty of questions regarding the sharpshooters background, and it seems the series has every intention of answering them in the upcoming episodes.

Penny Dreadful will return on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
