The CBS drama is looking to come full circle as the series finale approaches, and the most effective, albeit devastating, way to do so was to place Jane (Simon Baker) back in the world of tragic loss.

While the pain of losing Vega (Josie Loren) is in no way comparable to the grief the Mentalist went through after the murder of his wife and daughter, it will provide a catalyst for Jane's finale decisions - regarding both Lisbon and his job.

"We knew that we wanted in this last batch of episodes to sort of take the show back to the beginning," executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi explained to TV Line. "Jane's character was born out of trauma, in effect. The person that we watched for seven years was shaped very much by violent death. And though we had captured Red John and put that part of the story behind us, we knew we wanted to go back to that world - and that would involve killing someone."

If Jane's powerful "Nothing Gold Can Stay" speech has viewers believing Jane is ready to hang up his hat straight away, Szentgyorgyi is here to correct you.

"No. We haven't seen Jane work his last case," Szentgyorgyi said before ominously finishing his teaser. "Yet."
