With Jessica Lange leaving FX's American Horror Story it is now on the rest of the cast to follow in her legendary footsteps, but will someone from the cast step up as the new lead of season 5?

American Horror Story wasn't always Lange's show. Though she had a memorable supporting turn in the first season, Murder House featured Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott as the unequivocal leads. When Asylum came around, however, Lange turned into the star and subsequently led three consecutive seasons, from Asylum to Coven to Freak Show.

Cast members have come and gone over the four seasons of the show but with Lange now leaving, who will become the new lead? Assuming someone already in the cast is chosen, could it be Kathy Bates?

Will Lily Rabe Return For Fifth Season of 'American Horror Story'?

Bates has made a mark on American Horror Story, having won an Emmy last August for her role as Madame LaLaurie in Coven. She portrayed bearded lady Ethel Darling in Freak Show, a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

She is also relatively equal in terms of legendary actress status as Lange. While not necessarily full of snappy quotes, Bates could potentially lead season 5 with confidence. After all, she's already proven that she can be terrifying with her Oscar-winning role in Misery.

Bates can also play several different types of characters. Her Madame LaLaurie was one of the most evil women ever depicted on the show, while Ethel was a very sympathetic figure.

No casting decisions have been made yet so it's possible Bates may not even return for season 5, though she has expressed interest in coming back before.

American Horror Story season 5 is slated to air in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
