With Jessica Lange departing FX's American Horror Story some fans are hoping for an older actress of equal measure to lead the show for season 5, but could someone already in the cast like Frances Conroy helm the new season?

Conroy has been a standout through most of her seasons of American Horror Story, playing old maid Moira O'Hara in season 1, the Angel of Death in Asylum, the adorably kooky Myrtle Snow in Coven and mother-of-a-monster Gloria Mott in Freak Show. All of these roles have been supporting, with Myrtle Snow perhaps being her most prominent character.

Heading into season 5, the series will be without Lange, who has led the past three seasons. Could Conroy step into her shoes and lead?

Could Angela Bassett Command 'American Horror Story' Season 5 In Place Of Jessica Lange?

The actress certainly has past experience leading a show. She was one of the stars of HBO's beloved drama Six Feet Under, playing the reclusive and complicated Ruth Fisher. The role earned her four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win, proving to be the most beloved member of the cast, awards-wise.

Conroy does not have the commanding "star" presence of Lange, but her versatility as an actress proves that she could certainly lead a season if asked to.

There have not been any big cast announcements for the fifth season of American Horror Story, but some new information should be coming this spring.

American Horror Story season 5 is expected to begin in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
