‘The Vampire Diaries’ News: Julie Plec & Ian Somerhalder Reflect On Season 2 Episode ‘The Descent,’ ‘Powerful’ [VIDEO]
The CW's hit supernatural show The Vampire Diaries has been on air since 2009 and executive producer Julie Plec and star Ian Somerhalder recently reflected on an episode from Season 2.
Last Friday ETOnline revealed what Plec and Somerhalder had to say about Season 2's The Descent, which aired in January 2011.
That episode focused heavily on an old vampire named Rose (Lauren Cohan) who was on the brink of dying because of a werewolf bite. Watch her death scene below.

Plec said of Somerhalder's character Damon that he "realizes that she is suffering," adding, "So he decides that he is going to put her out of her misery."
Damon used his vampire ways to make Rose have one last peaceful memory despite the intense agony she was feeling due to the werewolf bite.
"She is getting the warmth of the sun, and feeling safe, and comforted as he talks her through her last moments of life," Plec said, adding, "Then he stakes her and puts her out of her misery."
"It was a very powerful death for a character that had been alive for a really long time. I think just the universal idea of being at the end of your days, and being at the end of time, and having to face your own mortality is a big thing. It was a moment of selfless compassion for Damon who, that early in the series, hadn't quite been showing that [emotion] much," Plec revealed.
Somerhalder agreed with Plec that Rose's death was an impactful scene.
"That was a really, really powerful moment because it is the scene I am most proud of too. I know I'm not a showrunner, but after six years you feel like it is all your blood sweat and tears. In the same vein when he gave Rose that really peaceful death, it was a really beautiful scene and to be honest with you, I fought that s--- tooth and nail," Somerhalder shared.
