'Angry Birds' Sequel Release Date: 'Bad Piggies' Set For Sept. 27 Release [VIDEO]
"Angry Birds" has captured America's attention - and smartphone screens - and now players have a chance to see the other side of the story.
Set for release Sept. 27, a new spin-off game called "Bad Piggies" will give users a chance to play as the green pigs that antagonize the angry birds throughout all previous installments of the game.
The idea was born from fans' curiosity about the green pigs and their backstory that hasn't yet been revealed in other "Angry Birds" games, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a statement.
"There's a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the 'Angry Birds' games, and we've been constantly asked: what about the pigs' side of the story?" Hed said. "'Bad Piggies' gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the 'Angry Birds' universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes."
Rovio has kept mum about details of the game, and the creators haven't even released screenshots of "Bad Piggies." But early hints indicate this installment will be quite different as the pigs won't be using the slingshot made famous by the angry birds of various colors.
"There's so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the 'Angry Birds' games, and 'Bad Piggies' is the first glimpse as to what's going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs," the statement from Rovio said.
Expectations are high for the game considering the massive success of "Angry Birds." The franchise brought in $106.3 million for Rovio in 2011, with about a third of that revenue coming from licensing and merchandising.
