The shieldmaiden will head back to Wessex with Ragnar's (Travis Fimmel) settlement party, and it is there that she will start an affair with King Ecbert (Linus Roache). Coming from drastically different cultures, the couple's romance will take a slightly comedic spin.

"In the relationship between Ecbert and Lagertha, it came about partly thinking about their different languages. And so the comedy is really a lot in the language. And people who don't understand each other but are attracted to each other that's a great premise. That's a great premise both for love and for comedy," series creator Michael Hirst told HitFix, adding that Lagertha's Viking heritage makes having an affair no problem in her book, unlike the characters who are of Christian faith.

Lagertha's (Katheryn Winnick) pagan beliefs, however, will shock Ecbert's nobles. Winnick's character will play the priestess in a farming sacrifice, causing even more consternation for the locals.

"There are a lot of Christian fundamentalists around at the time," Hirst explained. "But then I thought, "Well, like most things, in a show you need to see it from a particular point of view of someone that you're vested in; that you care about so why isn't Lagertha the priest in this case?"
