Scarlett Johansson: Broadway Return, Playing Lead In "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof"
Scarlett Johansson will return to Broadway in January.
The "Iron Man" star is set to reprise the role of Maggie in the Tennessee Williams-penned "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."
The fictional story made its original debut in 1955 and became famous when it hit the big screen in 1958 starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman.
HBO's "Game of Thrones" star Ciaran Hinds will play alongside Johansson as the wealthy Mississippi Delta cotton plantation owner Big Daddy Pollitt. Debra Monk, a Broadway veteran will reprise the role of Big Mama.
"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" will be directed by Rob Ashford, who recently choreographed Ricky Martin in the hit Broadway play "Evita"
Ashford has previously directed plays in London as well as Broadway. He had success leading actress Rachel Weisz in another Tennessee Williams classic, "A Streetcar Named Desire" and British hunk Jude Law in "Anna Christie." On Broadway he has both directed and choreographed several hit musicals including "Promises, Promises" with Kristin Chenoweth and "Will & Grace" star Sean Hayes, and "How to Succeed in Business without Really Tryin" with "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe.
Johansson won a Tony Award for her role in her Broadway play that opened in 2010, Arthur Miller's "A View From the Bridge."
The 27-year-old took to the stage earlier this month at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, to urge young people to re-elect President Barack Obama.
Dressed in a patriotic white t-shirt and a grey suit, Johannson raised her fist as she encouraged her generation to make their voice heard.
"I speak to you not as a representative of young Hollywood, but as a representative of the many millions of young Americans, particularly young women, who depend on public and nonprofit programs to help them survive," Johannson said.
"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" opens on Jan. 17 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. Previews begin Dec. 18.
Johansson will return to the big screen in the biopic about filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. She will portray actress Janet Leigh about the making of the Hitchcock classic "Psycho."
