Tom Cruise: Scientology Isn't Keeping Daughter Suri From Him
It's been almost two months since Tom Cruise has seen his daughter Suri, but a friend of Cruise says Scientology isn't to blame for the lack of contact.
Cruise hasn't seen Suri in about seven weeks, and it's because he is 3,500 miles away shooting a film in the United Kingdom, not because ex-wife Katie Holmes is keeping Suri away from her father, The Daily Mail reported.
Cruise's friend Bert Fields told People Magazine that reports of Holmes keeping Suri away from Cruise because of Scientology are "hogwash."
"This has absolutely nothing to do with Scientology," Fields said. "This is something that's been going on her whole life - when Tom is shooting a film out of the country, he has to rely on the telephone."
Speculation abounded that Scientology was behind the surprise divorce between Cruise and Holmes earlier this year, but both sides have publicly denied that Cruise's religion played a part in the dissolution of the marriage.
Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has worked on four films with Cruise, and he said every interaction he's had with the 50-year-old actor has been marked by his love for his daughter.
"I can tell you that I haven't had a meeting with Tom that was not interrupted by a phone call with his daughter. His heart is broken. He misses his little girl and works very hard at parenting," McQuarrie said. "His hands have been tied."
Cruise hasn't been spotted out and about with Suri since Aug. 5, when he took her on a father-daughter trip to Disney World. He has since been fulfilling work obligations in London on the action film "All You Need To Kill."
"He was finishing ['Oblivion'] when he learned his wife was divorcing him. He was immediately committed to [All You Need Is Kill] and there was no way he could not honor that commitment," McQuarrie said. "You are talking about millions of dollars, hundreds of jobs."
