Production is currently underway in Los Angeles for the crime drama's second season and as fans eagerly await the announcement of a premiere date, some are wondering if the program could possibly live on outside of television.

On Friday the fan site True Detective Rumors suggested that the show, which became a breakout hit in 2014 as a result of riveting scripts and compelling performances, might thrive additionally as a book series.

'True Detective' Creatlor Reveals Why He Chose Vince Vaughn?

True Detective does having some pretty strong ties to literature, having been entirely developed by novelist Nic Pizzolatto. In addition to writing the book Galveston, Pizzolatto wrote the entire first seasons of True Detective by himself. This has given the series a very distinct flow unique to his own writing style.

This season, True Detective will follow the murder of a corrupt city manager on California. It stars Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Colin Farrell (Detective Ray Velcoro), Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides) and Taylor Kitsch (Paul Woodrugh).

Production has been underway in Los Angeles for nearly five months now, though the network has remained guarded when it comes to releasing photos from the set or hinting at a release date.

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
